How the "system" hurts African Americans

The short answer: history. The long answer? Generations of discrimination built into the systems that shape our lives school, work, housing, finance have led to where we are today. After slavery ended, Black Americans weren’t handed a clean slate.  The major things that I wish to highlight in the blog post have to do with how the African American community is disproportionately affected by aspects of the American legal system regarding the prison system and how it is an endless cycle that needs to be addressed in the aspects of incarceration rates and even including poverty rates that stem from old ways of discrimination such as redlining that still have great affects on the black community.  One of the most glaring disparities in the American legal system lies in the incarceration rates among African Americans. Despite making up only about 13% of the U.S. population, Black individuals account for a disproportionately high percentage of the prison population often nearing 40% in some states.
